Last spring President Hanlon appointed a group to “identify institutional targets for conservation, efficiency, and the continued reduction of carbon emissions.” With another record hottest year amid political turmoil, you can make a difference by helping the Task Force set bold targets and find innovative solutions to meet them.
Our open letter (below) was delivered to the Task Force on January 10. We garnered more signatures in the following two months and on March 31 delivered it to President Hanlon and the Board of Trustees.
The signing period has closed, but please contact us if you want to get involved or hear about the next initiative.
Letter
2017.1.10
To the Chairs and Members of the Dartmouth Sustainability Task Force,
We the Dartmouth Alumni for Climate Action, representing 286 voices over 43 class years, urge and offer to help Dartmouth ambitiously lead collegiate climate action by eliminating its greenhouse gas footprint, while we do the same in our own families and communities. Above all we emphasize urgency; never before has the scientific consensus been clearer about the resultant destruction and suffering if we fail to act now.
We want our alma mater to thrive in both education and research, while working to solve the world’s toughest problems. We envisage Dartmouth teaching 21st century scientific literacy, social responsibility, and multi-generational awareness in the best way possible – by practicing each. With a growing list of peer schools’ impressive emissions reductions [1] and future commitments [2], and with an uncertain future for the EPA and NASA Earth Science program, the time is now to lead in climate action.
We are an ally and asset to the Task Force, which has an enormous challenge ahead with limited time and resources. What are your challenges? What can we do to help? Among us are professors, writers, engineers, teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and finance professionals who can interpret climate science, investigate energy technologies, review the literature, draft proposals, and more.
We encourage bold targets. The 2008 emissions reduction pledge was a very successful program that is now dated, so we suggest a new campaign with these goals:
- Neutral greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 (scope 1 and 2)
- Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 (scope 1, 2, and 3)
Additionally we support a Climate Action Plan with the following criteria: binding milestones, adaptability to changing markets and technology, evidence-based academic rigor, comprehensive scope of costs and benefits, transparency through third party evaluations and public annual reports, and innovative solutions.
These goals constitute smart investing. The current levelized cost of increased efficiency and new renewable generation evidence that many emissions reduction investments are safe and sound. However this is only part of the imperative to act, since Dartmouth’s purview is fundamentally educational and with a much longer timescale. Dartmouth built the current heating and power plant in 1898, and will still need that service in 2100 when the Paris Agreement requires near-zero global emissions. For the US to meet its mitigation commitments, market and regulatory forces will make polluting incredibly expensive. An early, voluntary start would allow Dartmouth to carefully and intentionally plan a zero-emissions campus with low cost and high reliability as priorities while interest rates are at historic lows.
These goals are right for Dartmouth. Big Green alumni [3] are preeminent climate negotiators, policy shapers, writers, architects, researchers, and entrepreneurs. A recent petition to divest garnered over 2500 student, faculty, and alumni signatures. Dartmouth was chartered in part to educate Native Americans, whom researchers find will be some of the hardest hit by extreme weather patterns. And in a blog post on his recent travel to the Arctic, President Hanlon remarked that “the biggest take-away for me was the urgency and delicacy with which we must approach issues of energy, environment.. and the role Dartmouth can play in helping pave the responsible way forward for its people and planet.”
We laud President Hanlon for appointing the Sustainability Task Force, which suggests to us a serious and evidence-based approach to reducing the College’s emissions footprint. The next step is committing to adopt bold goals and investigating the most efficient ways to achieve them. For this we offer our support and capabilities and will follow this letter with a Review of Sustainable Campus Innovations, as it is our goal to work constructively with the administration, trustees, and this Task Force to help Dartmouth lead and teach responsibility in the 21st century.
Energetically,
Dartmouth Alumni for Climate Action
(formerly Alumni for Dartmouth Divestment)
