We are Dartmouth Alumni for Climate Action.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Theodore Seuss Geisel, The Lorax
As of this writing, 197 national and international scientific organizations have publicly stated that global climate change is happening and caused by humans. So far non-committal statements have only been made by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Institute of Professional Geologists, the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences, and the Geological Study of Australia. No scientific organization directly opposes anthropogenic climate change. If such broad consensus were reached about coffee’s existential threat to humanity the outcry would be deafening and the action immediate. We are calling for that kind of response.
We propose Dartmouth be a climate action leader in three areas: divestment of the endowment from fossil fuel companies, move the campus and operations to zero carbon emissions by 2030, and develop research and an academic curriculum focused on reducing emissions and the effects of global climate change.
Dartmouth’s own mission statement promises students a “lifetime of learning and responsible leadership.” Help us help Dartmouth seize this opportunity to lead and teach by example.
